I don’t think anyone will debate CGS is doing something great for the esports community. They’re paying players a regular salary and putting competitive esports on international television. Although they are doing a good job thus far, I think they could do a few things differently and make it even better.
Scoring System
As announced in a recent press release from CGS, they are very happy with their scoring system. As a fan, however, I am not. It’s very frustrating when you’re a fan of a Counter Strike: Source team who was drafted to CGS. This team wins all but one match of the season, but they way CGS sees it, they only won one match because they’re FIFA, Dead or Alive, and their Project Gotham Racing players weren’t all that good.
You could have a Source team go undefeated for the entire CGS season and not make it to playoffs because the rest of the franchise isn’t that great. This isn’t fair to the players, fans or the franchise. This doesn’t only affect Source fans, it could also affect fans of other CGS supported games. If you are a FIFA fan you a player goes undefeated for the entire season but doesn’t make it to players because their Source team didn’t do well, this is very disappointing.
To avoid this they should stick with only one game for the league or split up into different divisions. Each game could have its own divisions and be treated separately from the rest of the franchise. You can then have a champion and players for all the games separately. This will make it fair to the fans and the especially the players. It only makes sense to give those players reorganization for being the CGS Counter Strike: Source champions if they didn’t lose a match throughout the season.
Make it less cheesy
The first time I saw the setup for CGS I was very disappointed. It looks very bland, generic and cheesy. I think it’s cool how they have a stage and have everything setup in the middle of the area to make it viewable to the fans attending the event live. However, it looks like the stereotypical set that you would expect to see on a competitive esports program. CGS should get the set redesigned.
DirectTV only
I completely understand why CGS is exclusive to DirectTV in the United States. However, I don’t think many people will switch to DirectTV just to watch CGS. This also completely limits the leagues potential. They should try to work out a deal with a national cable network that supplies most homes in the country. For instance, Spike TV does annual video game awards. It may be a good idea for DirectTV to get something worked out with them. That would make it possible for almost anyone who has cable in the United States able to watch the problem which would boost their ratings significantly.
Not enough teams
It’s understandable why CGS started with a low amount of teams. It is easier to manage, fewer amount of names they would have to copyright, and if the league had failed, it would have been less people thee would cut. However, it doesn’t make much sense to have a lengthly season if all but two teams qualify for the playoffs no matter what. If they doubled the amount of teams, it would force every team to play their best in order to win every match at the risk of not qualifying for a spot in the playoffs.
Lacking quality commentators
Although Fatal1ty is a decent commentator, it would be nice to have different commentators for each game. Fatal1ty is a great player and has been very successful in every game he has played professionally but he doesn’t have much experience with the games CGS supports and it would be more beneficial to the fans if they got commentators who were very experienced with each game. They could further explain what is going on in every situation and why it is important.

First of all, go back to school your grammar is terrible. Nobody is going to take you seriously unless you make an effort in collaborating your opinions without any grammatical errors.
Second of all, I agree with you. CGS is going to fall soon unless they make a significant change, or I should say changes in pluriel.
Yes it is cheesy, yes the commentators suck. But then again, when it comes to the Direct TV issue, hey bro, not everyone can have what they want… If you’re stuck with a different cable company that doesn’t broadcast CGS, tough luck man, if you don’t make the change to Direct TV, then it’s not THAT important to you anyways. I’ve been with Direct TV long before CGS even started, so I guess I got lucky.
Another thing that you might want to add in your CGS complains list is the camera system during CS:S games. We need more 1st person views, I mean seriously, you can barely see anything that happens, and in addition to Fatality’s lack of CS:S knowledge, it makes it even worse.
True, they have source TV info available, but when you’re trying to watch this live through the cgs website or Direct TV, it’s just not working at all.
Hey, i totally agree with this post. But one thing which you guys should into is another FPS game, you all know COD4 is huge and i think this would be a great boost to CGS.
my 2 cents
Well first off nice article, I agree completely with the commentators. In my experience shoutcasting the best shout casters for a game are the players, its alr8ight to have a lead commentator with little knowledge of the game to run the show but you need guys with knowledge to shed some light on things. If the goal is to bring in spectators they need to know what the hell they are watch and whats going on.
The CoD4 for CGS things is getting old, yes i’m a CoD series caster but honestly if it gets it its gets it i’m tired to see coD4 plugs in every thread that has the word CGs in it.
I agree with some of your things, but you have to remember that the CGS is new. They are trying to take online gaming to a whole new level. Right now, they are just testing the water you know?
I don’t see how you are mad at the scoring system. Let’s take professional sports for example. You tell me this, the Detroit Lions back in the 90’s were a HORRIBLE team, yet they had one of, if not the best running backs ever. He didn’t get to play in the playoffs, because he didn’t have a good surrounding staff. Same thing in CGS, just because you have good CSS players, doesn’t mean your ORGANIZATION should make it to the playoffs. Maybe instead of changing the scoring system, they should have 2 different playoffs, team and individual. Team is just like how they have it now, head to head teams playing. Individual would be like the individual divisions have their own playoffs.
Secondly, I don’t see what you mean by how the CGS is cheesy. It is not cheesy at all. They have the gamers set up in the middle so all the fans can see their respective teams. What do you want them to have sidelines, benches, and dug outs?
I do agree that the CGS should expand to other cable networks, but just like I state earlier, they are a new organization and still expanding. They are making a huge outbreak in just putting gaming on TV. Once other cable networks see just how successful they really are, and how much good that the CGS could bring to them, I think that it will expand to other networks.
Once again, the CGS should have a lot more teams in the future. They are opening up to other countries, not only the U.S., which is also huge for gaming again. Hopefully it will make gaming a world wide sport, something that other sports couldn’t do. Tell me how big of a drop off there is in American soccer to European soccer. There is just a huge difference in the levels of skill. Hopefully the CGS will let players from other countries and ours play at the same skill level. There should be more teams in the future, probably about 15-20 per country I am hoping.
Quality commentators, they are lacking that. Just because Mr. Wendel is by far the most skilled and experienced gamer ever, doesn’t mean he is a good commentator at the games they play. Once again though, these should come with time.
That is how I feel on the CGS. I think that the CGS will be a VERY big movement in gaming as a whole with some time. They are making tons of moves to better it. Let;s give it some more time before we criticize it.
Something must be criticized before it can be improved. The CGS is the next step in gaming. So I wouldn’t take these as bad, but merely as what should be improved. As far as cheesiness goes, it reminds me of American Gladiator.
lol, I liked the first reply of this blog. I read the first sentence and hes bashing the guy for having bad grammar…. Yet he has a couple of grammar mistakes just in the first sentence…
mpvomwdr…

I want to see professional Counter-Strike players such as Jonathan “FODDER” Reynolds swap over to Counter-Strike: Source and join a CGS team. I am tired of seeing fRoD’s AWP go unmatched. I want to see some classic clashes just like the old days… screw all of this garbage!!!!!
It make sense people plug CoD4. What is the point of making a FPS that has such a small playerbase in comparison to CoD4, which it could be assumed would draw much larger amounts of spectators.
Face it nobody new to FPS’s gives 2 shits about CS.
