The Media Attacks Gaming Violence.

The media has been on the video game industry’s back since the advent of violence in video games. Fast forward to the present day, and the fact that major broadcasting companies continually dare to scorn the use of violence and sex in video games is ironic, and has become progressively more so with the release of shows like Stacked(starring Pamela Anderson), and Bones(a violent forensics drama) airing on Fox Network. Fox, if you may not have heard, is the television network to most recently take aim at the gaming industry, specifically targeting Mass Effect. In Mass Effect, the player can choose to develop a relationship which results in some rear nudity during a less-than-a-minute long scene of sexual intercourse that barely rivals Oil of Olay or Victoria’s Secret commercials in terms of eroticism.
However, the media has an interesting double standard known in the industry as profits. They calculate when and where to include sex and violence in their prime time sitcoms and dramas because they know controversy sells. But, they can also denigrate other media formats for their sex and violence, and still make a buck, again by creating controversy. In addition, these broadcasting companies are completely public and aired on cable, whereas video game content is private and must be bought. Fox had a panel discussing video games in it’s segment on Mass Effect which argued that the ratings are useless since children play the games anyway while their parents aren’t home. What? Then surely we should ban cigarettes, alcohol, and pornography?
Where does censorship end, is my point. At the end of the day it is the responsibility of the parents to do their job, even as increasingly difficult as that is becoming in today’s world. Pornography is readily accessible as any teenage boy with a network connection is aware, he likely doesn’t need the pixelated polygons in Mass Effect to get the job done. And Hollywood and the Media create more than enough violent content to satisfy even the most sadistic thirsts for blood. The truth is that the media will continue to bash video games, while airing ads for films like Hostel, which if recreated in a virtual world would create a tidal wave of condemnation by the media. Ignore the double standards of the media, because for every Manhunt sequel, there will be not one, but two equally if not more graphic and exploitative Saw sequels. And for ever laborious Hot-Coffee modification, there will be a Super Bowl XXXVIII half time show, aired publicly during the most-viewed hour in television.

I agree in full. I, personally, am extremely pitted against censorship in the media, whether it’s some National Lampoon movie on Comedy Central or something like Mass Effect that depicts violence and sex in a user-interface based format.
These regulations are put in place by conservative mothers and fathers who would rather outlaw the degradation (I agree that three year olds shouldn’t be seeing full nude sex scenes) - than put in place restrictors, and get more involved in their childrens lives.
I don’t profess to know exactly how to parent, but as a person who lives in the modern age of technology, and whose peers are involved in some racy media outlets, I can tell you parents that your child is much less likely to participate in those things if you allow them to see it in moderation - as long as said moderation is moderated by, I don’t know, you?

Media does this a lot, it’s not just video games.. look at what they do to Manson when a school gets shot up or what they do to Hip Hop when some suburban kids get hurt trying to ghost ride their parents cars. People try to put so much blame on everything and everyone except parents. Parents complain about kids surfing to some site they don’t think is appropriate.. and think someone else is responsible to keep their kids away from it… PLEASE parents should know their children.. if they can’t use their own discretion move the computer into the living room and watch them!
